We have been refused permission to reproduce charts from this era,  so please note that the list of singles on this page does not represent any one UK chart;  compiled from many different sources, the list is a general guide to the most popular singles of the month, ordered loosely by sales and peak chart position.

A No. 1 for Scottish teeny band Pilot, who had two or three hits in the years 1974-1977.   Formed around early Bay City Rollers David Paton and Billy Lyall, Pilot came together when David Tosh and Ian Bairnson joined the other two.  Since the split, Bairnston and Tosh have become session musicians.   Billy Lyall died of AIDS in 1989.

At No. 4 this month, the most successful Brother / Sister duo of all time.  They first teamed up in 1963,when Richard was 17 and Karen 13.   The Carpenters had nine UK hits in the Seventies, including this cover of the 1961 Marvelettes U.S. hit.  Later in 1975, Karen was taken ill with exhaustion aggravated by unwise dieting, and had to rest for two months.   Four years later, Richard too was to have his problems - with pills taken quite legally for insomnia.  This caused him to take a year off, but he got back with Karen in 1980.   Success was still there, but Karen always had problems with Anorexia Nervosa, and in February 1983 died from cardiac failure brought on by chemical imbalances caused by the condition.   Richard is now a solo performer and arranger, while Karen is remembered in re-issues which have never failed to sell.

Angie Baby was the only UK Top Ten hit for Helen Reddy, who was always more successful in the States than in this country.  Originally Australian, she has lived in the U.S. for many years, and now concentrates mainly on theatre work.  Helen has other talents too; she has always involved herself with public issues, and for three years was Commissioner for Parks for California.

Formed in 1968, The Stylistics did not achieve immediate or spectacular success, and it took a year or two for their soft-soul talent to be recognised.  The fivesome were fronted by Russell Thompkins Jnr, with his distinctive high-tenor voice, and Star On A TV Show was one of 12 hits here between 1972 and 1976.   This was their best era, and in 1975 their album The Best Of The Stylistics became the biggest-selling UK album of the year.  Up against the disco fever of the late 70's,  they faded quite a bit, and nowadays the three remaining Stylistics only perform occasionally.
