We have been refused permission to reproduce charts from this era,  so please note that the list of singles on this page does not represent any one UK chart;  compiled from many different sources, the list is a general guide to the most popular singles of the month, ordered loosely by sales and peak chart position.

1971 saw the start of Slade's chart success. Second single Coz I Luv You was the first of Slade's six No.1's from 1971-1973, and the second of 22 Top 20 hits up to 1984. Slade split up in 1988.  They re-formed briefly as Slade II in 1993, but Noddy Holder and Jimmy Lea moved on soon after, leaving drummer Don Powell and guitar Dave Hill as the only original Slade members in the new band.

At No. 8, the longest-lasting Boy Band of all time.  Levi Stubbs, Renaldo Benson, Abdul Fakir and Lawrence Payton first got together in 1953, became The Four Tops in 1956, and had chart success on both sides of the Atlantic from the Sixties to the Eighties.  Simple Game had been a Moody Blues B-Side, which producer Tony Clarke brought to the Four Tops' attention during a British tour.  The boys sang together until 1997, when Lawrence Payton died.  The band is still performing today, with Theo Peoples (ex-Temptations) now making up the four.

And speaking of longevity, I spy at No. 11, Cherilyn Sarkasian La PierGypsys Tramps And Thieves peaked at No. 4 in Britain, and was the third of 14 Top Twenty hits for her as a soloist, her first being Dylan's All I Really Want to Do in 1965.  An all-round career in entertainment has included TV shows (including comedy) and films as well as singing.  She's fallen out of favour a few times over the years, and has sometimes been the target of jealous journalists in the Worst Dressed awards - but she's still there, and in 1999 had her first U.S. No 1 since Dark Lady in 1974.

Ernie was Benny Hill's fourth Top 30 entry, and reached No. 1.  Benny was an unwordly man with little interest in money, and after his death in 1992 it was found that his only legal will was to his long-dead parents.  An unwitnessed will was found naming five close friends, but it had no legal standing - so in accordance with the law his estate of £7.5m was divided among nieces and nephews.

Middle Of The Road, with lead singer Sally Carr, had sales of 10m worldwide with first hit Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.  In the mid-70's they relocated to Italy and were big in Europe for years after.  Sally tours with a new band now, which retains the name Middle Of The Road.
