Chess players are really spoiled on the Internet, for there there must be hundreds of good chess sites available (I've personally seen dozens).  Here are eight of the best, all excellent, but all with their different specialities.

Bernard Milligan's Borders Chess Pages
Might as well start off with my local one.  Anyone in the South of Scotland will already be familiar with Bernard's site, with its famous House of Horrors gallery of Borders chess players.  But it's not only local news you get here, for this site also has sections on Chessbase products, Correspondence Chess, Chess Scotland, etc etc.  Good one, Bernard.

The Week In Chess
The netzine of The London Chess Centre, TWIC is normally my first stop for Chess News.  News, full tournament results, games to download, and of course you're only a link away from The London Chess Centre's online shop.

Braingames
Covering more than chess, this site includes among others:  a daily classic game; a daily prize puzzle;  and a readers forum for discussing chess-type things.  You can also join a club, to play chess online.

The Internet Chess Club
This is the biz.  Membership costs $49 per year, for which you can play quick games (1min to 30mins is the normal spread) against people all over the world.  Fainter hearts can still enjoy kibitzing online games between members, and an addictive feature is regular live coverage of tournaments where members can comment in a chatroom on the games as they progress. [The chat in a recent J. Polgar game wandered off the subject somewhat, but we won't go into that].  Great fun.

FIDE Website
A large, crowded site packed with info about players (all FIDE ratings etc) tournaments, news and everything else that FIDE are involved in.  The site to go for official data.  Again, you can also play online.

Chessbase
No, not just an ad for Chessbase's products.  The news is better presented than in any other site I know, and seems to be updated more often too.  The site does not try to be a chronicle of every single tournament, but instead concentrates on stories of real interest to followers of international chess.  A Five-star site.

Chesslab
The central part of this site is a database of 2 million games which you can search by position, player, location etc.   If you're studying an unusual opening line, this is the site.

Chess Shareware
Some free stuff from Gambitsoft.  If you're looking for a free computer program,  Gnuchess isn't bad - though naturally don't expect all the features you'll get in one you pay for.
