Choice of Photograph
Two stories in this week's review: the advert that was banned from
British TV; and what Dutch scientists are doing with wasps (sensible suggestions
only, thank you). We thought we'd lead with Kylie rather than
the wasps; after all, who'd want a photo of a small, annoying, tiny-waisted
creature that returns to plague us year after year? Quite.
Here's the KM story:
Too Raunchy For Us
Ms Minogue was to star in a lingerie commercial wearing suspenders,
a see-through bra and briefs. While half the nation was switching
over to more adult sights, the other half would have seen her sitting
on a mechanical bucking bronco and performing various suggestive movements
in an attempt at wild Oz eroticism (who says that things are dumbed down
these days?). Thankfully for those of us who prefer real women it
was deemed unsuitable for TV, and will be shown in cinemas only with an
18+ certificate.
Wasps
Dutch scientists have successfully trained wasps to detect drugs, explosives
and other substances simply by using classic Pavlovian techniques.
All they do is feed the insects while at the same time exposing them to
the smell of hash (in Amsterdam this requirement does not pose insuperable
problems) and within only one hour the wasps start exhibiting feeding
behaviour whenever they smell the drug. Brilliant - and if they
can ever get them to tackle armed robbers then Police, Camera, Action
will be totally unmissable.
Footnote
Dogs take about 6 months to train. They're not thick - they just like
to spin it out.

| THE
EARLY YEARS |
|
KM was born Kylie Ann Minogue in
Melbourne on 28 May 1968, to father Ron, an accountant, and
mother Carol, whose Welsh parents had settled in Australia.
Kylie got her first TV part at the
age of 10, as Carla in The Sullivans. Other TV
work followed, and in 1986 she was selected to play Char Kernow
in The Henderson Kids. Soon after, she landed the part
of Charlene Mitchell in Neighbours, and made 542 episodes
up until 1988, when she left the soap to concentrate on her singing
career.

CAREER |

Can't argue with sales. A successful career in wholesome pop
developed musically in the '90s when Kylie adopted a more adult and
raunchy image. With almost 30 consecutive Top 20 hits in Britain,
she is one of the world's most successful music artists, and in 1998
Kylie, her maiden album from 10 years previously, was certified
six-times platinum. Seven other albums since 1988 have been
released, all of which have been huge hits in Britain and other countries.
OK, so I don't like her much, and
I don't see her at all as a sexy woman - but do you think she cares
about that? No, I don't suppose she does.
